So we have now ‘officially’ opened, with an extravaganza involving 100 guitars, 100 saxophones, circus, choirs, orchestras and the massed Bristol public. People began queuing at around 4 and a general sense of anticipation took over the building. It was great night. The best thing is how well the new foyer welcomes people into the complex, people seem to really enjoy standing on the bridges and just soaking up the atmosphere. A highlight for me was seeing Charles Hazelwood enjoying conducting the massed ranks of Bristol’s guitar scene as they tried to shake the building apart. Sorry if you were at another gig and there was no guitarist on stage for the first bit, that was our fault.

Young people have been core to how the hall has developed over the last few years, with the expansion of REMIX and our other youth activities. A very early strand of the opening celebrations was a decision to hand the venue over to a group of young people and just let them completely program the space. They came up with the concept of new generation takeover and it was a great day. The foyer space was constantly buzzing with youth dance and bands, hall 2 saw a whole range of different type of performances for DJ’s to grime and in the main hall they had teamed up with Teenage Rampage showcasing a lot of the best of the bands that they had worked with. They had also wanted to program some of their hero’s in a space they could see them so a big thanks to the likes of Turbowolf who managed to drop by to play a blistering set on their way to another gig and hats off to Roni Size who played an exceptional set on Saturday night.

Before the day was over we had already begun talking about what they want to do next year . . .

The New Generation Takeover really lived up to its name as Colston Hall was overwhelmed by 600 extra party goers who turned up on the evening. It was a complete success and the Hall thankfully didn’t get too damaged! Jakes, Roni Size and Joker were amazing and added that extra talent and enthusiasm to the night. JME was also great and the crowd loved him, and so did I! Along with DJ Quest and the competion winning DJs, they all absolutley smashed it! The whole day was great and well managed with everyone there really enjoying themselves. Here are a few photos from the night that shook Colston Hall.

I didn’t know what to really expect from the night but was most definatley pleased with what I saw, and heard. The main highlights of the evening for me were the Saxophone Massive, Akumapa Drummers and the Dohl Drummers who I thought were amazing and added a really good feel and tempo to the night. Its well planned and thought out co-ordination meant that you were never without a song or a beat and helped to carry the evening’s acts along one after the other really well. Here are just a few pictures taken from the opening night celebrations.

I am so excited… I can’t wait for this performance of Roni Size and the Emerald Ensemble Orchestra… I never seen him in a live show but I like his music and his talent. I can already see the picture…it will probably be like the last performance of The Bays and the Heritage Orchestra in Colston Hall. I remember…it was November and I was quite sceptical about that concert…maybe because of the combination between classical music and DnB. Actually it wasn’t just me, everyone was sitting down in a strict silence like the most important orchestras request for a concert… and then after half hour the people started moving on the chairs following a strange rhythm, a mix between a classical melody and a strong sound coming up from the percussions… and then from there it was just pure energy…. one of the best I had ever felt in all my life…people dancing everywhere emitting such fantastic sensations of vitality and joy…The orchestra was getting more and more power from the audience …and this was the best result from that evening. everyone there couldn’t agree more!! So Roni Size will not disappoint me….he will be great and I hope to find the same atmosphere of that night with the Bays and the Heritage Orchestra…no sorry…from Roni I want more!!!!I am looking foward seeing this concert!!!!

Well I suppose the big news is that there really wasn’t one. The Big Gig last Saturday was a great success. The bands were fantastic, but most importantly for me the complex worked really well. Okay, I will admit we sat down at the end of night and produced a long list of various things that need to be looked at and tweaked, but fundamentally the complex works. At one point I was sitting outside the H Bar with a big grin on my face watching about 1,000 people occupy all the floors and spaces in the new foyer. For me personally, who joined the project over 5 years ago, it was a fantastic sight.

Tuesday night saw the classical soft launch with the Emerald Ensemble and an audience of about 1,200. By all reports the ensemble performed really well but as a team we were getting ready to run a full evacuation of the auditorium. Now it is rare to run a full test like this but we felt it was important to see how it would work. We also decided to make things difficult for ourselves by nominating the west corridor as the location of the fire, which takes out two major street level exits. Again it worked well and we had the venue empty in 7 mins. We will obviously be changing some things and believe we can get the time down but 7 mins gives us a healthy margin for safety.

I must also apologise to the bass player of the Emerald’s, as I was leaving stage after thanking the audience I bumped into his music stand and sent the music flying, all a bit embarrassing in front of 1,200 people, but I got a nice round of applause.

Tomorrow night we have our first in short series of soft launch events. I have always felt it was important to test all the assumptions and design decisions we have been making over the last 3 years before we start charging customers to come in and use the building and on Saturday we have a test and a half. The Big Free Bristol Gig, which has been put together with DCB productions, will have 10 local bands playing throughout the venue, using the foyer performance space, hall 2 and the main auditorium. The event is sold out and I am really excited.

We have had the public in the building at other times for various one off events but this is the first time we will have run the whole complex in the way we imagined it. I am expecting something’s to go wrong, and I am expecting some things not to work how I thought they would, but that why it’s a test. To be honest if it all goes smoothly I will be a bit surprised and disappointed. We need to learn where the loose bits are before we open to paying customers. We have another event on Tuesday with the Emerald Ensemble, and there is still a few tickets left for it, so if you fancy coming down and helping us to do a bit of quality assurance testing give the box office a ring!

We told you to keep looking at the line-up of the Invada Invasion and now you can tell why. Mogwai are confirmed as part of the Invada Invasion evening on Saturday 26 September. Now that was worth waiting for wasn’t it? Tickets are, unsurprisingly, starting to fly out so get yours sooner rather than later. Obviously that’s not all on that day, there are a huge amount of top acts playing, DJ sets from Grumpyman and Malakai and an art exhibition planned. Sounds too good to miss. And have a look at the brilliant poster designed by the wonderful Marc Bessant,

Last weekend was Bristol’s Harbour Festival, an event that the Hall has been involved in for four years. This year we focused our efforts on our usual site in Queens Square, where we run the music stage, and a new site in Redcliffe Wharf for the REMIX youth music stage. A great weekend was had by all and the organisers are reporting record numbers which is certainly in line with the bar take from the bar we run on site. I must also take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Willmott Dixon Construction who sponsored the stage and provided me with nice coffee throughout the weekend.

So what is the advantage of a well stocked backstage bar? Unfortunately the headliners for Sunday evening managed to breakdown in Newbury, on their way to the Festival, but only let us know 20 mins before they were due on stage. Obviously such a large gap to fill with such little time was going to be a real challenge, but luckily there were enough of the cream of Bristol’s music scene hanging around drinking backstage that a bit of a super group was cobbled together. The core of which was Los Mercenarios with Craig Crofton, Mike Willox and Guy Calhoun, but Phil King, who had done a corking set earlier in the day, joined them on vocals and John Fenlon on harmonica. It was a great way to round off the Festival and they really had the crowd jumping, so my thanks goes out to them all.
